Fred Perry Laurel
Classics
Fred Perry was the first
sportsman to become
a ‘brand’,
after the British tennis star
was approached in the late
1940s by Tibby Wegner, an
Austrian footballer who had
invented the first
‘wristband’. Perry made a few
changes to the design and so
the first sweatband was born.
Continuing the partnership,
Wegner then created a sports
shirt made from white, knitted
cotton pique with short
sleeves and buttons down the
front. Perry loved the design,
the iconic laurel leaves logo
was added and the Fred Perry
polo shirt made its debut at
Wimbledon in 1952. The shirt
was an immediate success and
since then has gone on to
achieve iconic status.
Still as popular today as
it was 50 years ago, the Fred
Perry polo shirt is a fashion
classic worn by urban
sophisticates, musicians and
sportsmen and women. It
crosses the boundaries of
status, providing everyone
with a wearable polo shirt
that never goes out of style.
The brand has now expanded
to
include other clothing, but
those famous laurel leaves can
never be confused for
anything
other than a genuine, original
Fred Perry Classic.
