The emergence of Penguin as a brand is one of those great, spur of the moment stories that captured the imagination of an entire generation of clientele with a great sense of humour and a love of quality clothing. The company originally started in 1955 in Minneapolis as Munsingwear – an underwear and military supply company. One of the salesmen spotted a flock of penguins in a New York taxidermist’s window and, just for a joke, he bought one of the birds. ‘Pete’ the penguin became the official mascot and the company immortalised him as their logo for their golf shirts. The rest, as they say, is history.
